About the role
We are looking for a Financial Controller for North America who will be responsible for managing financial accounting and compliance aspects within our North American entities: Canada, the United States and Mexico. This role is ideal for a strategic and proactive manager capable of leading an accounting team and driving process improvements across multiple entities.
The Financial Controller for North America, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in Canada, is responsible for overseeing accounting and tax compliance processes within North American entities, ensuring consistency, accuracy and regulatory compliance. In this role, you will oversee key financial processes and work closely with international teams to support the growth and success of the Group. We are looking for an operational "hands-on" manager who excels in a dynamic environment and who wishes to lead by example. This position requires a person capable of providing strategic oversight while being ready to roll up their sleeves and contribute directly to operations when necessary.
Responsibilities
Team management
- Lead a team based in Canada and Mexico
Accounting and internal controls
- Supervise accounting operations within North American entities, ensuring compliance with local legal requirements and company standards
- Lead month-end closing processes at the regional level
- Coordinate audits required at statutory and group levels for North American entities, with support from local accounting teams and head office
- Prepare and provide required corporate reports for North American entities
- Supervise payroll administration for North American entities
- Lead treasury activities and cash flow planning for North American entities
- Manage collaboration with lawyers, external advisors, banks and tax authorities
- Monitor the evolution of accounting procedures and implement necessary changes
- Lead and support special projects across North America, contributing to strategic initiatives
- Manage, develop and support the accounting team across all North American entities
Tax compliance
- Ensure that all local tax filings are accurate, complete and submitted on time
- Collaborate with the global tax team to monitor compliance with the company's transfer pricing policies across all intra-group transactions in North America
- Provide support on tax matters (for example, sales taxes, corporate income tax) within North American entities
Travel and availability
- Availability to travel occasionally to Averna offices across North America
Requirements
Essential skills, knowledge, aptitudes and abilities
- Bachelor's degree in accounting required
- CPA designation required
- 8 to 10 years of experience in a similar role within a multinational organization
- Payroll management experience in at least one of the following countries: Canada, United States or Mexico
- Team management experience, with strong leadership skills and the ability to develop team members
- Experience with adjustments to local GAAP with a foreign head office
- Solid knowledge of accounting and reporting standards, with demonstrated experience in multinational or North American-level supervision
- Solid knowledge and experience of IFRS standards required
- Experience with revenue recognition according to IFRS (percentage of completion method) and project accounting: an asset
- Solid knowledge of taxation – sales tax is mandatory, mastery of transfer pricing is an asset
- Experience managing auditors in an international environment
- Advanced Excel knowledge
- Experience using an ERP; (D365 – an asset)
- Mastery of French and strong mastery of English required (mastery of Spanish is an asset)
- English proficiency is required for this position to ensure effective communication with teams outside Quebec and to contribute to our international business activities
