Aston CarterSenior Tax Consultant Job Description The Senior Sales and Use Tax Consultant will oversee multi-state sales and use tax compliance, manage audit activities, and provide technical tax guidance across the organization. This contract consulting role focuses on ensuring timely and accurate tax filings, maintaining robust documentation and exemption certificates, and optimizing tax systems and processes. The consultant will leverage deep indirect tax expertise and tax software proficiency to support a multi-year tax transformation initiative and serve as a key advisor to cross-functional stakeholders. Responsibilities Prepare, review, and file monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns across multiple states and local jurisdictions. Maintain complete and accurate records of all tax filings, exemption certificates, and supporting documentation. Ensure ongoing compliance with state and local sales and use tax laws, regulations, and reporting requirements. Manage sales and use tax audits, including gathering and organizing documentation, responding to auditor inquiries, and coordinating audit timelines. Conduct reverse audits to identify potential overpayments or credits and support efforts to recover those amounts. Monitor changes in sales, use, and indirect tax laws and regulations and implement necessary process or system adjustments to remain compliant. Provide clear, practical guidance to internal teams on the taxability of products and services, transaction tax issues, and indirect tax implications. Configure and maintain tax engines such as Vertex, Avalara, and OneSource to ensure accurate taxability mapping and calculation. Perform system integration testing (SIT) and user acceptance testing (UAT) for tax-related projects and system changes, documenting results and resolving issues. Collaborate closely with Accounting, Procurement, Accounts Receivable, and IT teams to ensure proper tax handling across transactions and financial records. Train employees on tax compliance processes, procedures, and the effective use of tax systems and tools. Support tax reporting, tax return preparation, and tax provisioning activities as needed, including reconciliation of tax accounts and balance sheet items. Assist with indirect tax analysis, account reconciliation, and general ledger review related to sales, use, payroll, and property taxes. Contribute to a multi-year tax RFP and transformation initiative by sharing subject matter expertise, process improvement ideas, and system configuration insights. Essential Skills At least 5 years of hands-on experience in sales and use tax compliance. Strong background in multi-state sales and use tax and indirect tax. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Proficiency with tax software and tax engines, including Vertex, OneSource, and Avalara. Demonstrated experience managing sales and use tax audits and responding to auditor inquiries. Solid understanding of state and local sales and use tax regulations and compliance requirements. Experience with tax reporting, tax return preparation, and tax analysis. Strong Excel skills and data analysis capabilities for tax calculations, reconciliations, and reporting. Experience with account reconciliation and general ledger review related to tax accounts. Ability to configure and maintain tax software for accurate taxability mapping. Experience performing system integration testing (SIT) and user acceptance testing (UAT) for tax projects. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in tax filings and documentation. Ability to communicate complex tax concepts clearly to non-tax stakeholders. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with Dynamics 365 or similar ERP systems. Exposure to broader tax areas such as federal tax, state income tax, payroll tax, and property tax. Familiarity with tax provisioning and tax software used for tax provision and reporting. Experience with reconciliation of tax-related balance sheet accounts. Knowledge of indirect tax concepts beyond sales and use tax, including other transaction-based taxes. Experience participating in large-scale tax transformation or RFP projects. Ability to train and mentor team members on tax systems and compliance processes. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple jurisdictions and deadlines simultaneously. Work Environment This role operates in a hybrid environment, with four days per week onsite and Fridays remote. The position is based in South Norwalk within a short walking distance from a major train station, offering convenient access for commuters. The consultant will work closely with Senior tax leadership and the indirect tax team as part of a multi-year tax project. The environment is collaborative and project-focused, with regular interaction with Accounting, Procurement, Accounts Receivable, and IT teams, and frequent use of leading tax technologies such as Vertex, OneSource, Avalara, and Dynamics 365. The work setting is professional office-based, with standard business hours aligned to project and filing deadlines. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Norwalk, CT.
