Director of Accounting

About the Role

The Director of Accounting will lead the financial reporting and key operational accounting functions across multiple divisions. This role will provide oversight of month-end close, AP process, and audit activities. This position will report to the Senior Director, Finance and support the department and all its functions.

Location: Hybrid role requiring commute to ACOG's office in Washington, D.C.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has direct supervisory responsibilities, which may include serving as a coach and mentor for those supervised. This position will supervise the Manager, Accounting and two Staff Accountants.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the management of financial operations including general ledger, A/R, A/P, cash management, etc.
  • Ensure that financial transactions are reported on an accurate and timely basis.
  • Collaborate with Finance team in accurately providing information for accounting firms to prepare 990, 990-T, 5500 and state tax returns in a timely manner.
  • Direct the preparation, review, and dissemination of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for executive leadership and departmental stakeholders, translating financial results into meaningful insights to support decision-making.
  • Prepare and disseminate financial statements to other department leaders.
  • Lead, supervise, and develop the accounting team by setting clear expectations, providing ongoing coaching and performance feedback, conducting performance evaluations, and supporting professional development, training, and succession planning within an inclusive and collaborative work environment.
  • Manage day-to-day accounting, general ledger, month/year-end closes, and financial reporting.
  • Ensure the consistent and timely processing of all financial transactions through effective supervision, review, and quality control processes.
  • Ensure adherence to GAAP, regulatory standards, tax laws, and establish strong internal controls.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Finance leadership and other departments to support organizational objectives, improve financial processes, and enhance reporting and operational efficiency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of Finance and organizational priorities.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced proficiency in basic Microsoft Office suite (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Prior experience with general ledger software preferred (Microsoft Business Central, etc.).
  • High level of integrity, professionalism including teamwork and ability to deliver within short deadlines, work under pressure and multi-tasking skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to manage multiple activities in a deadline-oriented environment. Highly organized, flexible and possess a strong attention to detail.
  • Deep understanding of accounting principles, practices, and regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and provide actionable insights.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to addressing accounting challenges.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and lead a high-performing accounting team.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • 10 years' experience in accounting, compensation and grant reporting
  • 3 years of supervisory experience
  • MBA or CPA preferred
