About Environmental Protection Authority

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA; Māori: Te Mana Rauhī Taiao) is New Zealand's national, independent environmental regulator and a Crown entity. It regulates hazardous substances and chemicals, new and genetically modified organisms, marine activities in the Exclusive Economic Zone, and fast-track/national consenting, and it administers the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme. The EPA also carries out compliance, monitoring and enforcement of New Zealand's environmental regulations.
